Linda Cohen

Mother: Gabrielle 11, Solomon 8, Wife: to Aaron for 16 years and Blogger: 1000mitzvahs.org

Two years ago, I began a “Mitzvah” project as part of my healing process when my father died. My mitzvah project was a personal endeavor.  I had no intention of sharing it with anyone. However, over the course of the two years, I have discovered the tremendous benefits of this project. It has been helpful for myself and my family and has resonated with friends and now strangers. Sharing my experience has helped others who may have had their own loss or perhaps just want to reconnect with a deeper sense of doing acts of kindness. Giving and receiving can be equally gratifying and being aware of their connection is powerful.

I am originally from New England. I left Vermont after high school and spent my first year of college in Israel. I received my BA from the University of Judaism in Los Angeles and my Masters Degree from Brandeis University. In Boston I met and married my husband. We moved to Portland 15 years ago and have successfully transplanted in the west coast.

Speech topics include:

  1. The Giving Ladder.  Discuss the Maimonides Ladder of Giving. This ancient Jewish scholar had 8 levels of giving. This is an interactive speech with examples of each level of giving and audience participation.

  2. Mitzvahs.  The general concept of small gifts.  Teach people how to do this every day.  Inspire them to make the change.  Take the 30 day mitzvah challenge.

  3. From the Darkness of Grief to the Lightness of Light. Discussion of mourning, grieving and acceptance. Will touch on concepts from Jewish mourning rituals – non-denominational.

  4. Interview style – Q & A about Doing Mitzvahs/acts of kindness. Favorites, hardest, inspirational.

"It was a pleasure meeting you and Dr. Martin. Thank you both for
speaking with us. We all enjoyed it very much. After you left we shared
our losses with one another. It was great to have that outlet. Thanks."
Dawn Cutting, President

  • More about this Blog

I began this blog in January 2007, a month after my father died. It was a way to move through the darkness of grief that I was feeling at that time. It has proved to be a transforming experience both for myself and my family. This mitzvah project has allowed us opportunities to talk more about my father, doing mitzvahs and sharing more family stories. Through this project, I have moved from the darkness of grief back to the lightness of life.
