I won’t pretend that I know a whole lot about Lent, except that throughout my life I have heard that people give something up for Lent. I’ve heard that it can be sweets, caffeine or something else. So I was delighted last week when a friend shared with me that her pastor whom I had recently met had shared my book during his Ash Wednesday sermon. He mentioned that the 1,000 Mitzvahs book offered many simple ways to give of oneself. He invited his congregants to consider taking something on like doing acts of kindness or mitzvahs this year in observance of Lent.
I am sure that a 40 day trial of doing mitzvahs would create a new awareness of opportunities to give. While it is unclear exactly how long it takes to form a new habit like doing a mitzvah every day, certainly committing to do them during a period of heightened consciousness would make it more likely you’ll be looking for them.
Let me know what you think about doing mitzvahs for Lent rather than giving something up and if you haven’t started yet it certainly isn’t too late.

I think that is a wonderful idea! If a person is not currently doing acts of kindness on a regular basis, this could be a marvelous introduction to the practice.
This year, I am giving up drive thru windows for Lent. That way, even if I don’t need/want to use the services of the business, every time I pass one, my attention will be drawn to Lent and the purpose of the season.
