February 29th – Leap Day: An extra day for gratitude

Tomorrow is Leap Day. Yes, the day that shows up once every four years. This year as the day has been approaching, I have been thinking about how we often wish we had more time, just a few more minutes doing something we are enjoying or spending another day on vacation. Perhaps you won’t be on vacation tomorrow but it certainly can serve as a reminder for how valuable each day is. Tomorrow can be a 24-hour period when we can consciously think about the role time plays in our life and the gratitude we feel about each day we are alive.

So don’t waste this opportunity. Decide that tomorrow, all day you will look around for the possibilities, the opportunities you have to be present, focused and in service in your little corner of the universe. I think I might put a string around my wrist so that if I forget to be grateful and present the little string can remind me.

What about you? What are you going to do with your extra day?

I have been posting a mitzvah a day now for two months and at first I thought it might be hard to think of something everyday to share (yes even though I have a blog titled 1,000 Mitzvahs I was worried I wouldn’t always be able to come up with a daily suggestion). Ironically, it has helped me refocus again on what paying attention to my daily life can show me. Perhaps my list can offer you some ideas for how to improve your day tomorrow.

Wishing each of you a joyous Leap Day filled with lots of opportunities to notice how important gratitude and our precious time really is.
